EngrIT Migration Gotchas

General Comments:

First login takes a long time (5 minutes common, 10 not uncommon, 15 heard of)

Issue/Solutions

Problem

Possible Solution

Notes

XP computer no printers or mapped drives

Install update to XP to allow Group Policy Preferences to apply

Win7 works automatically. Find on software share

Office fails randomly and takes forever to start

Check shortcuts and mapped drives for one that is still on uiuc.

Clear out “recent documents” or docs under Word/Excel/etc in start menu recent programs area

Look for somewhere that is ad.uiuc.edu instead of ad.uillinois.edu

It would be nice if this just failed but it doesn’t.  It just doesn’t work well and crashes.

On startup, Word says
“Can’t connect to \\ad.uiuc.edu\netid (file://ad.uiuc.edu/netid)” (or similar)

Check if folder redirection was applied in old domain and is not applied now.  Apply it if it isn’t and should be and restart.

Otherwise, Open Word, go into Options->save, and fix the default location to be ad.uillinois.edu DFS path instead

Happens if redirection not applied to offline files after migration but was before.  The default location isn’t updated.

XP: When adding/changing/etc files on desktop, user has to hit F5 to see changes.

Note there is BOTH a hotfix AND a reghack.

RegHack:

  1. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
  2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  3. Type NoSimpleNetIDList, and then press ENTER.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  5. Type 1, and then click OK.

If shell32.dll’s timestamp is after July 14, 2003 you just need the reg hack.  (Hotfix came with SP3)

Non-admin users do not have write privs to that location in registry.

Directory Issues

Added user to employment group, but they did not appear (or vanished)

Employment groups are currently sycn’d once a night.

Some of them auto-sync to Banner–if this is the case any changes made in the directory will be removed.

If the employment group has had auto-sync broken, Josh is working on making those instant update, the same as the office groups.

Check the setup page to see if it is auto-syncing.

To clarify, auto synching happens if there is something in the ¿PClass Synch¿ and ¿Scope¿ columns in the categories table on the setup page.  The ¿Enable¿ checkbox determines whether or not that category is an available option but doesn¿t have anything to do with whether it synchs or not.

Added user to office group and they didn’t appear in the AD group

Delete & readd the user

This happened once.  Quite unlikely but the fix was simple so added it in.

I need a unit-office-SOMETHING-students group

Email jpotts

I want to modify the office group membershi

This can be done within the directory editor.

NOTE: If the department is using the directory to populate web pages or such, you probably shouldn’t muck with it–ask whoever is maintaining it in the department  Use -plus groups if you have people who should be treated (for resource access) IDENTICALLY to those in the personnel group.   It’s possibly they just don’t want someone on, say, the web page for that office.

Profile Data

The easy way to migrate profiles is via EngrIT ForensIT Guide If you are moving by hand, be aware of the following.  Most can be retrieved from the old profile at least, if something is missed.

Shortcuts

If your unit used shortcuts rather than mapped drive, updating these are critical.   Anything that points to \\ad.uiuc.edu\ will sort of work but will crash programs and hang the machine.  Fortunately these are usually on the desktop on the server.

Other email accounts in Outlook

Will need to be relinked in after user logs in

Archive / other PST

Critical!    Default on Win7 Office 2010 is C:\Usersusername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook but they can be anywhere.

These also will need to be relinked into Outlook after user logs in

Office & other settings

Annoyance.

Firefox / Chrome bookmarks

Critical for people who use these browsers primarily

For firefox, copying the entire c:\users(username)\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles into the new profile brought everything over.

IE Favorites

If your unit did not redirect, copy these up to the server because they will be redirected in he new world order

Desktop Wallpaper

Annoyance.

iTunes

Not work related, but could be a lot of data and upset users

Office .oft files

Templates for Office documents. Critical for anyone who uses them.

Windows 7 with Office 2010 they are in: C:\Users\ user name \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

Pidgin

Logs are the main thing that need to be saved. Also means don’t have to recreate accounts.  Just copy to new profile

c:\usersusername\AppData\Roaming\.purple

Dymo templates

These are per machine, so for the migration not too big a deal.  If you are reinstalling a machine, though, they are hiding in either program files or public user, depending on Windows version. Also upgrading Dymo deletes them from XP at least, so careful!

Random Settings Issues/Gotchas:

Need to have ad.uillinois.edu in the DNS suffix search list for DFS paths to resolve (Can be done in GP, and Engineering currently has. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb847901.aspx )

Need to make sure UOFI\netid or group is added to administrators prior to system move if you want user to be admin when they login. (Engineering USA machines have USA and USR applied to admin by GP)
