Mostly HP, but some others as well, included
19 cartridges in the pilot program at this time

Choose OfficeMax and Guy Brown (sub contractor for Office Max) to be the vendor moving forward

Remanufactured cartridges does not void printer warranties.
There is an OfficeMax warranty.
If a toner cartridge explodes, OfficeMax/Guy Brown will replace / repair the printer
Response within 4-6 hours

Partnering with Laser’s Edge to be HP certified repair. Lazer¿s Edge is HP Certified. In the instance where a remanufactured toner has failed, departments must first contact OfficeMax for the repair service to be under warranty and paid for by the vendor.

Color remanufacturing toner are not part of the program because the colors are not accurate. Color toners are not part of the pilot program but, we have received discounted pricing on many color cartridges. Color remanufactured cartridges may vary slightly from the OEM colors, so its not recommended for departments printing high quality materials, but most regular departments would not notice the variance.

Many people have experienced leakage problems with reman. toner.
They think that Guy Brown is selling higher quality reman. toner.

University of Michigan has gone the same route 2 years ago – happy

Jason’s Notes:

Q: If you are using an HP printer and non-HP toner, and the toner explodes and ruins the fuser, HP will not cover the printer under warranty. How is this handled?
A: The remanufactured toner contract has, in writing, guarantee of replacement of the printer within 4-6 hours. This includes a new warranty on your new printer. This warranty can be found on the $ource, under OfficeMax, http://apps.obfs.uillinois.edu/source/dsp_Main.cfm.

Q: Can we use Lasers Edge?
A: We are working to get Lasers Edge included in the program, but they have not been responsive so far. You can help by asking your Lasers Edge contact to engage with this program. Lazer¿s Edge has been HP Certified. In the event that a cartridge fails you will still need to contact OfficeMax to report the incident and for the service call to be covered under the warranty and be paid for by the vendor.

Q: Is there a procedure in place for remanufactured cartridges that don’t work?
A: First response is phone triage. If the problem is with the printer, they will respond within 4-6 hours. There is always an option to return toner cartridges no questions asked.

Q: Is this program viable for high-volume, high-quality printing?
A: There is a decrease in quality with remanufactured toner, especially color. The pilot focus will be on black toner, which is much closer to OEM quality after remanufacture. There is always an option to use OEM toner if you are willing to pay for the premium. OEM Toner will not be blocked within the punch-out however, remanufactured toner has been aggressively discounted.

Q: I have had problems with OfficeMax toner leaking. Is that addressed?
A: Office Max uses several different types of remanufactured toner. For this pilot, we have chosen to use Guy Brown as a redistributer, based on feedback on quality. The OfficeMax / Guy Brown combination has been working well at the University of Michigan for the past 2 years. If you have problems with quality, please let us know.

Q: If there is a toner explosion problem, who is responsible for contacting the vendor for cleanup and replacement?
A: The departments will be responsible for contacting the vendor.

Q: What brands of printers are covered?
A: Primarily HP, but a few others (LexMark, Xerox, …) Brother.

Q: What if I have a new printer? How long does it take to get remanufactured toner for that model?
A: Typical turnaround on new models is 6-12 months. You will have to use OEM toner for that model until then.

Q: How do I find what toner is available?
A: There is a shopping list in iBuy for remanufactured toner, which includes all 19 models. Also, if you search for OEM toner and a remanufactured toner is available, iBuy will ask if you want to substitute the remanufactured toner instead (it DOES NOT automatically substitute). There is also a crosswalk available on the $ource, under OfficeMax, http://apps.obfs.uillinois.edu/source/dsp_Main.cfm.

Q: What is the time period for the pilot program?
A: December 1, 2011 – February 28, 2012

Q: Can I buy the toner without being in the pilot?
A: Yes! If you are in the pilot program, you will be asked to complete a survey at the end of the program. Also, if we notice that you are buying the toner but not in the pilot program, we will ask for feedback as well.

Q: How do I recycle the toner?
A: See our flyer! It¿s located on the $ource, under OfficeMax, http://apps.obfs.uillinois.edu/source/dsp_Main.cfm.

Q: How can I tell what remanufactured toner I need for the current OEM toner I have?
A: See our crosswalk! It¿s located on the $ource, under OfficeMax, http://apps.obfs.uillinois.edu/source/dsp_Main.cfm.

Q: What is covered under the OfficeMax warranty?
A: Take a look at the warranty statement! It¿s located on the $ource, under OfficeMax, http://apps.obfs.uillinois.edu/source/dsp_Main.cfm.
